5 Nutrition Tips For A Healthy Mouth

Spring is here and we are all starting to think about getting ready for those summer months, this blog looks at multi tasking... whats good for our bodys is also good for our mouths! 

 

As they say, ‘you are what you eat’. Although this saying shouldn’t be taken too literally, it is important to remember that what you choose to eat affects your body, general health, skin and mouth! What we put into our mouths can literally be good for our mouths and together with have a good oral hygiene and visiting us regularly, your oral health will be on top form!

Here are 5 nutrition tips for a healthy mouth:

Go Raw

Raw vegetables and fruits, such as apples, pears, celery, carrots etc help to clean plaque from teeth, freshen breath and are 1 of your 5 a day. It’s a win, win situation!

H20

Water is always the best drink to choose for a healthy mouth as it helps to promote saliva. This helps to prevent tooth decay as it contains the proteins and minerals, which counteract enamel eating acids.

Vitamin C it

Vitamin C is an antioxidant that is found in oranges, tomatoes, strawberries and other fruits and vegetables. This helps to protect gums and other tissues from cell damage and infection from bacteria.

Vitamin C also helps your gums to stay strong as it helps produce collagen.

Choose dark vegetables

Dark green vegetables, such as spinach, peas and broccoli as they contain folic acid which helps the cells in the mouth (and the entire body) grow and repair.

Dine on dairy

Foods containing dairy (cheese, milk, yogurt etc) are rich in calcium and vitamin D. This helps to keep teeth and bones healthy and reduces the risk of tooth loss.

Calcium also helps protect your teeth against gum disease. So swap that chocolate bar for a nice slice of cheese!
